Classic Hollywood Cinema

Elements of Classic Hollywood Cinema

  •  Obscuring the camera to create "natural" flow of story - creating a believable reality using various film techniques - un realistic this makes a type of formalism rather than realism.
  • Film centers on the actions of a protagonist.
  • Story is about protagonist's struggle to pursue desire.
  • Story takes place in linear, continuous time that is consistent connected to a fictional reality- you don't feel "disjointed" sense of time.

German expressionism. not finished

What are the key features of German expressionism?

German expressionism was a term used to refer to a number of related creative moments which emerged in German during the 1920s.

Expressionism as a movement spanned across many media to include theater, architecture, music, painting and sculpture.

The first expressionist films was The cabinet of Dr Caligari.(1920), The Golem (1920)

Sound in German expressionist films are very dark music like playing a violin very
rapidly.

Lighting
The lighting is focused more on the characters faces and what there doing or there whole body.

Camera work
The camera work is pretty much close up shots in the film always focusing on the characters facial expressions.
Mis En Scene
objects that are usually in german expressionism films are wierd things that you wouldnt have in a formalist film.

Editing
There wasn't editing when they shot these scenes.

Where can the influence of German expressionism be seen in history?

About Run Lola Run

Run Lola Run was definately a formalist film because in the film the storyline repeats itself three times throughout the film.

Setting:
The setting was based around a french city or maybe german city and the use of locations is used very wisely, using locations like a bank, a supermarket, a flat.

Camera Shots:
Theres alot of close ups in the film because most of the film is shot with the man being in a phone booth and the woman character running.

Sound:
the sound that is used is fast adrenaline music to support the woman running all the time.

one major part of the film is fate, because the film repeats itself 3 times it gets the viewer guessing whats going to change next time round
